Humane's Ai Pin promises an 'ambient computing' future for $699 (plus $24 a month) Humane has officially launched the Ai Pin, a small device that attaches magnetically to the wearer's lapel and collects data using an on-board camera. Powered by a Qualcomm chip and leveraging AI, the Ai Pin aims to eventually replace smartphones. It features a camera, microphone, depth and motion sensors, and processes data with a Snapdragon processor. The device is controlled by voice and gestures, and it communicates with the wearer through a "personic speaker" or Bluetooth headphones. It operates independently without a smartphone, using a Humane-branded wireless network built on T-Mobile.
The Ai Pin's standout feature is the Laser Ink Display, which projects text, like incoming calls, onto the user's palm. It comes with "battery boosters" for hot swapping power sources, ensuring all-day battery life. The device also includes a "Trust Light" to indicate when it's recording, addressing privacy concerns.
Running on a proprietary operating system called Cosmos, infused with AI, the Ai Pin doesn't require apps. Instead, it connects users to AI experiences or services instantly. It can be customized off-device using the Humane.center service. The device's features include real-time translation, food recognition, and an AI-driven music experience with Tidal.
Priced at $699 with a monthly $24 subscription fee, the Ai Pin represents a new direction in technology, focusing on "ambient computing" – technology that integrates seamlessly into daily life. Humane, co-founded by former Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, has raised $230 million in funding and is backed by notable investors, including Sam Altman.
