Amazon to invest up to $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic Amazon has announced its intention to invest up to $4 billion in the AI startup Anthropic. This move comes as Amazon seeks to intensify its competition with tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Nvidia in the rapidly expanding AI sector. Initially, Amazon will invest $1.25 billion for a minority stake in Anthropic, known for its AI-powered chatbot similar to Google’s Bard and OpenAI. The deal also includes an option for Amazon to increase its investment to a total of $4 billion. As part of the agreement, Anthropic will utilize AWS as its primary cloud provider for critical workloads, including safety research and future foundation model development. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, expressed optimism about the future of AI, suggesting that advancements in the next few years will surpass current achievements.
Google sets its Pixel 8 launch event for October 4th Google has officially announced its Pixel 8 launch event, scheduled for Wednesday, October 4th, at 10AM ET in New York City. This announcement comes just a day after Apple sent out invitations for its iPhone 15 hardware event on September 12th. A mistakenly posted image on the Google Store has already revealed the design and camera layout of the Pixel 8 Pro. However, there's anticipation for more details on the entire Pixel 8 device lineup and the new Pixel Watch. Updates on the Pixel Buds A-Series, Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet are also expected. Google's event invitation humorously features the Pixel and iPhone having a "spa day," directing users to the Google Store for updates.
Amazon Prime Video will start showing ads early next year Amazon has announced that it will begin displaying ads on Prime Video starting early next year. This decision follows similar moves by Netflix and Disney+ who introduced ad-supported plans last year. Amazon plans to introduce ads in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada in early 2024, with France, Italy, Spain, and Mexico to follow later in the year. However, the company will offer an ad-free tier for an additional $3 per month to Prime members. Amazon has assured that the number of ads will be significantly fewer than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. The company's aim is to continue investing in compelling content and maintain that investment over an extended period.
Bluesky saw record usage after Elon Musk announced plans to charge all X users Social networking platform Bluesky experienced a significant surge in usage following Elon Musk's announcement that he would start charging all users of X (formerly known as Twitter) a monthly fee. This decision by Musk was aimed at combating the overwhelming presence of bots on the platform. As a result, many users flocked to Bluesky, with the platform witnessing a record number of daily active users and new sign-ups. Analytics firm Similarweb reported that Bluesky's Android app had half a million daily active users on the day of Musk's announcement, and its web traffic also saw a substantial increase. Interestingly, while Bluesky benefits when X faces challenges, other potential Twitter competitors like Instagram Threads or Mastodon don't see the same effect.
